Growing up I always heard the advice "do what you love" when well meaning adults tried to give advice on how to start living out in a big scary world as an adult. That advice was always followed with something like, "but not art", "but not photography", "but not writing".
So I took the safe route. I went to college and got a job that paid me to sit at a desk 40 hours a week, NOT doing what I LOVE but doing something I could live with. It wasn't until I was 20 years into my profession that I realized just because I didn't follow that advice initially doesn't mean I can't follow it now.
So at 40ish years old I starting turning my lifelong love of photography into a profession. I was finally doing what I love for a living, photography and more specifically sports photography. My only regret is that I wish I would have done it sooner. But the lesson I learned, the most important of all is that it's never too late to start over. And I'll still hand out that good old fashioned advice to my children that they should do what they love for a career, however there won't be any "buts" to follow.
